In violent inmate situations, safety comes from teamwork and following established procedures. The recommended approach is never subdue alone. Having a partner or back-up ensures someone is there to help control the situation, monitor the inmate’s condition, and summon medical or additional support if needed. This two-person rule keeps actions within policy and reduces the risk of serious injury to both staff and the inmate. It also supports clear communication, coordinated use of force within approved guidelines, and effective de-escalation by allowing one person to manage the scene while the other handles resources and safety. Isolating the inmate can provoke sudden aggression and leave staff without necessary support, avoiding confrontation isn’t practical when violence is present, and a vague tactical approach doesn’t guarantee the safety benefits that teamwork and backup provide.
